Two dead after Waikato crash

A male driver and a female passenger were killed and four people injured when their van collided with a truck and trailer unit in south Waikato last night.

The crash happened at the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 5, east of Tirau.

Senior Sergeant Murray Hamilton of Taupo Police said initial inquiries showed that the van ignored a stop sign on SH5 and drove into the path of the truck and trailer unit on SH1.

Of the injured, two men were flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition, while two women were taken by ambulance with minor injuries. The truck driver was uninjured.

SH1 between Putaruru and Tirau was closed following the crash and diversions put in place.

Seorang timbalan dekan dan penuntut Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) yang mengadakan lawatan sambil belajar di New Zealand terbunuh, manakala empat lagi cedera selepas van yang mereka naiki terbabit dalam kemalangan di utara Putaruru, daerah Tirau di negara itu malam ini.

Mereka yang terbunuh ialah Timbalan Dekan Fakulti Komunikasi dan Pengajian Media UiTM, Shafiee Ahmad, 51, (gambar) dan Mariam Ahmad, 19, dari Sabah, penuntut jurusan penyiaran di universiti terbabit.

Tiga lagi mangsa iaitu Amirul Rashid, Siti Murni Ayu dan Khairul Siti Mohd. cedera parah manakala Siti Aishah Razi mendapat cedera ringan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Seorang timbalan dekan dan penuntut Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) terbunuh dalam kemalangan jalan raya di North Putaruru Tirau, Hamilton, kira-kira 200 kilometer dari Auckland, New Zealand, jam 8.15 malam tadi (3 petang waktu Malaysia).

Mangsa terbunuh dikenali sebagai Shafie Ahamad, 51, Timbalan Dekan Hal Ehwal Pelajar Fakulti Komunikasi dan Pengajian Media, manakala penuntut yang maut dikenal pasti sebagai Mariyam Sakinah Ahmad, 21.

Dalam kejadian itu, seorang lagi penuntut parah, manakala dua cedera ringan. Mereka ialah Amirul Rashid, Siti Murni Ayu dan Khairul Siti Muhamad.

Seorang lagi penuntut dikenali sebagai Siti Aishah Razi, terselamat.

Difahamkan, Shafie dan lima penuntut Kelab Fotografi UiTM serta tiga lagi pensyarah dalam lawatan sambil belajar ke negara itu. Shafie dikatakan menetap di Jalan Ampangan 4, Seksyen 8, Shah Alam.

Seorang Pegawai Kedutaan Besar Malaysia di New Zealand, Dzulkefly Mustapha yang dihubungi berkata, kejadian itu dimaklumkan polis kepada pihak kedutaan kira-kira jam 12 tengah malam (7 petang waktu Malaysia).

"Polis memaklumkan van dinaiki enam orang itu terbabit dalam kemalangan dengan sebuah trak. Mereka yang cedera dirawat di Hospital Waikato," katanya.

Difahamkan mayat mangsa kini berada di hospital di Auckland.

Dzulkefly berkata, beliau sempat berbual melalui telefon dengan Siti Aishah, tetapi tidak mendapat banyak maklumat kerana mangsa masih dalam trauma.

Sementara itu, anak kedua Shafie, Jamaatul, 17, berkata ayahnya ke New Zealand dua minggu lalu membawa rombongan pelajar mengadakan lawatan sambil belajar bagi subjek Photo Communication.

"Ayah sepatutnya balik Sabtu ini," katanya.

Arwah meninggalkan seorang balu, Salimah Shuhaimi, 45, dan empat anak, dua lelaki dan dua perempuan.

Cikgu Elun?

Assalamualaikum The kid:what is rumah panjang, kak elun? Me: err..its like a row of houses..long houses..where more than 40 families live under the same roof..but then they have divider for each house..we can find it in Sabah or Sarawak, but not in Semenanjung The kid: What is Sabah, kak elun? *cane nk jawab ek* Me:err..its ok..one day, I will bring the Malaysia map and we will learn some places in Malaysia, ok? Well, that was part of the conversation we had today. I have to teach Bahasa Melayu to this eight year old kid. I would say his mother tongue is New Zealand English because he was born here, in Kiwi land. Since then, he went back to Malaysia just for a few times. So, it is understandable if he could not speak malay as the other malay kids at his age.Its quite fun though, because usually you learn english and have to translate it to malay in order to make you understand. But, in this situation, I have to translate the Malay word to the English word. Its like the other way around
